Technical, crisp, and numinous, Marcos Valella’s alluring works are open systems that challenge the viewing experience. The architecture of Valella’s system consists of three decisive elements: frayed textured fabric that borders the stretched canvas, mass manufactured artifacts like pins and fishing lure that pierce the surface and finally, thin layers of spray paint that veils what’s familiar to the eye. In this system, the act of painting is through the selection and placement of the pins. Their impermanent nature, allowing swift interchangeability, becomes a practical solution for refinement. The almost monochromatic palette of these ethereal works create a subtle magnetic hum that heightens the viewer’s senses. Tracing the textures of the draping form, the eye naturally scans the center for human touch but limited data is provided. Forced to step back, one might realize that they may be peering through a window, viewing a portrait or even a map. Valella rejects traditional pictorial solutions, creating instead a sense of the fantastic: images that feel simultaneously objective and impossible.
